We've been working with young people in Lozells to create a news programme and website.

Pupils attended media training workshops at the CAN studio in preparation for scripting and filming the actual news broadcast. The finished work is being distributed both online and on DVDs.

The Orchard School promo video

Walsall Housing Group - Youth Engagement Strategy

We have been working with Walsall Housing Group (WHG) since 2003 to document their regeneration programme on estates in Walsall. Some of our previous film projects have included Goscote’s Big Mouth, Bovvered About Bentley, The YES Programme and the Youth Oscars Night. The documentary process that we've developed with WHG has been used as a way of capturing 'snapshots' of estates prior to regeneration and the community growth that occurs as a consequence of those regeneration programmes.

The Ladywood Young Citizens' Conference

For the second year running we worked with the Birmingham City Council Housing Education Initiative (HEI) to document a conference which brought together agencies and pupils from local schools to discuss and plan the future of Ladywood.

150 children from Schools in Ladywood met with key housing and sustainability professionals to discuss issues affecting their communities and contribute ideas to the future development of the area. The conference was organised by the council’s Housing Education Initiative and funded through Urban Living.

The children presented short films on a number of issues
they have been investigating including; eco issues, housing,
citizenship and transport. They also took part in a planning
exercise looking at the Icknield Port Loop redevelopment area.

We Don't Like It! - Anti Social Behaviour

As part of the Active Neighbourhoods programme children from City Road J&I School and St. Patrick’s RC J&I School worked with Housing Education Initiative (Birmingham City Council) and CAN to produce three films that looked at anti-social behaviour.

The children felt that bullying was a real issue for them. In the films `The New Boy’ and `Why Do You Bully Me?' they address this issue by showing what can happen when you are being bullied. They advise other children not to try and sort bullying out themselves, but tell a teacher or parent. The films also contain results of a survey on bullying and talk about what it feels like to be bullied and advice on where to go to get help.

The children raised the issue of litter and dumping and discussed how they could stop it. Pupils were concerned about this problem and felt that litter and dumping was ruining their environment. They asked - “Who causes all the litter problems?”

The advert shows people of all ages who live and work in the community saying `We Don’t Like It’! It’s a clear message to anyone that most people want to live in a clean and tidy area.

Reduce Re-use Recycle

Birmingham Environmental Services commissioned a DVD exploring issues around litter and the effects it has on our environment. The DVD will be used in Birmingham schools city wide.

The video was divided into several sections including:

• Litter - What counts as litter 
• Problems - The effect it has on the environment 
• Enforcement - The penalties that the law imposes  
• Solutions - What we can all do to reduce the problem

Smethwick BYF Drugs Information DVD

We produced a DVD working with the Smethwick Youth Forum which looked at issues around drugs and how to reduce drugs related deaths within the Bangladeshi community in Sandwell.

The DVD looked at the sorts of drugs that are dominating the Bangladeshi community and where to get further information and advice. Aside from an English soundtrack by Anita Bala, there were also options to view the film in Bengali and Urdu. A booklet was included in the package which provided more information and help resources.

Goscote’s Big Mouth

The Goscote Big Mouth project was devised as a way to capture the views of residents about their estate. It provided Walsall Housing Group with a benchmark of where the estate was then and views about where residents wanted the estate to be in the future. 
The project which was funded by Walsall Housing Group and supported by the European Regional Development Fund will use the views recorded on the diary chair to inform the Goscote Corridor Masterplanning exercise.
